U.S. Congress ask President
Clinton to save
Sikh nation from nuclear holocaust Call for internationally
supervised plebiscite in Khalistan and support sanctions against India.
WASHINGTON, June 11 -- A bipartisan group of influential Members of
Congress wrote to President Clinton regarding India's nuclear tests. "India's
desperate act poses a serious danger to the whole world," they wrote. "We
understand that business and humanitarian organizations are lobbying you to lift the
sanctions against India. They should be lobbying India to abandon its nuclear program and
respect basic human rights."
Signers included lead sponsor Representative Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.), Government
Operations Committee Chairman Dan Burton (R-Ind.), Rules Committee
Chairman Gerald Solomon (R-N.Y.), Rep. Carlos Romero-Barcelo (D-Puerto Rico), Rep. John
Doolittle (R-Cal.), Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Cal.), Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Cal.), Rep.
Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.), Rep. Pete Stark (D-Cal.), Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.),

Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), Rep. Philip M. Crane (R-Ill.), Rep. Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.), Rep.

"The testing consistent with the murders of over 20,000 Sikhs by the Indian forces in
June 1984 and of more than 250,000 Sikhs by the Indian government in the last 14
years," said Dr. Gurmit Singh Aulakh, President of the Council of Khalistan which is
charged with leading internationally the Sikh Nation's democratic, nonviolent struggle for
independence. "The nuclear tests are just the latest facet of India's ongoing effort
to establish hegemony over all of South Asia," Dr. Aulakh said. "India's testing
and its deployment of nuclear-capable missiles in Punjab, Khalistan put the lives of
Sikhs, not the Hindu Nationalists, in grave risk," said Dr. Aulakh.
"This is a wake up call for the Sikh Nation to free Khalistan and make it a nuclear
free buffer state between India and Pakistan." The Members of Congress stated that
"India has deployed the Agni ballistic missile in Bhatinda, Punjab and the Prithvi
missile in Jalandhar, also in Punjab. Both of these missiles are capable of carrying
nuclear warheads. Once again, it is the Sikhs who will be the victims and their homeland,
Punjab, Khalistan, that will be the battleground . . . to the Indian government, Sikhs are
expendable."
"As the only superpower, America has an obligation to do whatever it can to prevent
India from sacrificing millions of Sikh lives in pursuit of its own hegemonic
ambitions," the Congressmen wrote. "The only way to bring peace and stability to
South Asia at this time of crisis and the only way to end India's holocaust against the
Sikh Nation is to support the peaceful, democratic, nonviolent freedom struggle of
Khalistan," they said. "We urge you to support an internationally-supervised
plebiscite in Punjab, Khalistan so that its political future can be decided in a free and
fair vote, the democratic way. We urge you to take these steps today to bring freedom,
peace, and stability to South Asia."
